Graphic Designer from Portland, OR that designs for web and print

In keeping with my yearly tradition, here is another blog post. This one is just to toot my own horn and give a small shout out to the Pinwheel Empire, the coolest basketball social network that exists.
Because today is Valentine’s Day, the header at Pinwheel Empire reflects that. And that little cupid guy was done by me. In no way do I consider myself an illustrator, but I had tons of fun making him. Here is the screenshot of the site:

And here is the little guy up close and personal:

Also, just a few words about love and Valentine’s Day. Love is cool. Celebrating love is cool. (Substitute cool for great, awesome, whatever.) Having a day to celebrate love is cool. But Valentine’s Day here has gotten a little out of control with the consumerism aspect.

Designing for yourself is probably the hardest task any designer will face. There is no harsher, more demanding client than oneself. Because as designers, we demand perfection, and that most certainly is the case for presenting your own brand. I can’t tell you how many iterations and sketches I did for my new logomark. Here is just a small sampling:
You can begin to see hints of the final work there, if you look hard enough. Sketching is a vital part to any design, and this came in spades when it came time to design my new logomark. I was never quite satisfied with my old one, but used it anyway. This one, I am proud of.
And for my website, this new look was way overdue as well. I hope visitors find it not only more pleasing to look at, but easier to navigate and use. I still have a few more tweaks to make, but by in large I am pretty happy with the design refresh for both my site and my identity materials.
I will be adding more new work soon that I’m pretty excited about, but can’t quite share yet!

Ok, so this old news, but I find the King & Queen Stamps utterly lovely. I love the line work—overall delicate, but bold enough to make an impact. I think these are a sweet and brilliant take on the “LOVE” stamp idea, and it’s great to see an illustration like this on stamps. Not only that, but they are sweet enough that it clearly communicates the idea of love, without resorting to red or abundance of hearts. In fact, there is no red or pink to be seen. I love that. They were designed and illustrated in part by Caffe Greco Design, who also did the Sofia Coppola wine label, which I also am entirely smitten with.

Since my last blog, I’ve been pretty busy! I working on an identity system with Lynne Williams, who is running for the Governor of Maine in 2010. Lynne and I worked closely together to develop her look, which I think speaks very well to her vision for the campaign. I am happy to report that this identity system, including her website, has neither borrowed or stolen from any other campaign, unlike one of her competitors.

In other other exciting news, this week the website for Permanent Cosmetics by Jamilla also went live! Both Jamilla and I are very happy with the site, as it adds an excellent addition to her marketing arsenal.

Under my Branding & Identity section I just added a new example : Creative Music Lessons.
The website is almost ready to launch, but here are the business cards:

This was a super fun project because, of course, I love music. Because Kristian’s lessons are geared for the younger set, I tried to keep a playful nature to this identity, as I did not want anything that screamed “Boring Lessons from a Frustrated Old Musician”. The balance was trying to keep the identity looking young and fresh, but not so young that someone of any age wouldn’t feel excluded.

Here in Portland, even if you are not a basketball fan, it’s been pretty hard to escape the basketball fever the town has fallen under lately. The city is very excited that our currently-beloved Blazers are in the playoffs, and it’s all over the various media mediums. Being a basketball fan–Blazers in particular–and a designer, one can’t help but comment on their branding versus their current opposition in the playoffs, the Houston Rockets.
vs.
Let’s take a look, shall we?

I thought I would try to get in the habit of documenting (blogging? If I must say it) some of this week’s inspiration for me. Like everyone, I am inundated with imagery on the world wide webs day in and day out. I’ve looked at many web pages this week, looked at many photos, read many blog posts. I’ve also bookmarked a ton of pages to revisit. But these two have stood out to me in this week’s maelstrom of visual content. Read the rest of this entry »
