Lectured.

gorgeous French Paper samplesLast night I was lucky enough to hear a free talk hosted by my alma mater PNCA (and Office PDX). Charles Anderson from CSA Design gave a presentation about his design work and his partnership with French Paper.

We were lucky enough to not only get free swag, as pictured, but an inside look at how CSA Design came to be, and how that partnership with French Paper is pretty extraordinary. Continue reading

A Little Local Love

Since I’ve recovered from what I affectionately dubbed “the Portland Plague” (one very stubborn, decimating cold that is making the rounds through everyone I know and *they* know) I’ve realized it’s been longer than I had planned between blog entries. I’d like to give some love to some of my closet design community friends and promote the cool stuffs they’re up to.

Devan Edwards' Many Design Projects
Miss Devan Edwards manages to stay one busy lady. Not only does she maintain The Owl House, a design collective with designers all over Oregon, but she also has started up her new wedding-centered design business, Le Petite Couture. The Owl House also has a blog where members contribute to design goodness, and Devan has her own site to showcase her own design talents. ALSO, she and Lisa Kline run an etsy shop called ellasquid, which has handcrafted goods that are too cute for words. This lady is oozing creativity!

I love Helvetica…the Movie.

Helvetica DVDYes, it is here. Yet another blog post about Helvetica [the Movie]. I thought I would get my blogging feet wet with a topic that should come fairly easy to me to write about.

I love type. I love looking at typography, fonts, and letterforms. I love the movie Helvetica.

However, I have seen little to no thoughts being expressed about the film itself. This is probably because I primarily read design blogs and other designers’ blogs and not film blogs, where naturally the conversation is steered towards typography and not film anatomy. So I thought I would extend the conversation a little bit.

This film is visually compelling, filled with lots of rich imagery (much of it highlighting Helvetica’s letterforms) and stunning cinematography. These do not get mentioned very often. The colors are vibrant, and the shots are well composed. Gary Huswitt has made a well-rounded film about what appears on the surface to be a singular topic. The interviews with design’s grand poobah’s of type and graphic design manage to be both initmate and engaging, even with their huge range of personalities. The soundtrack to the film is unassuming and enhances the visuals, but never tries to outshine the visuals; it is simply there, without it though, the movie would not be the same.

My Very First Blog.

Hello! It’s finally come to fruition, my website that has sat on the back burner for months and months (years?) while I completed other design work. I have intended for this blog place to act as an update page of sorts, to let anyone know what has been recently added to the site, or projects I have in the works. However, I have a gut feeling that I will also want to throw my two cents into the blogosphere about design-related goodness every now and then.

I know there are probably still a few quirks to be ironed out here, and this blog section may change somewhat as to how it looks, so if you come across anything funky, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

me and minny hard at workOh and this is my studio-mate. She makes getting work done difficult sometimes. So does the other studio mate I have, but in this picture she’s sitting on my lap.
