Yes, it is here. Yet another blog post about Helvetica [the Movie]. I thought I would get my blogging feet wet with a topic that should come fairly easy to me to write about.
I love type. I love looking at typography, fonts, and letterforms. I love the movie Helvetica.
However, I have seen little to no thoughts being expressed about the film itself. This is probably because I primarily read design blogs and other designers’ blogs and not film blogs, where naturally the conversation is steered towards typography and not film anatomy. So I thought I would extend the conversation a little bit.
This film is visually compelling, filled with lots of rich imagery (much of it highlighting Helvetica’s letterforms) and stunning cinematography. These do not get mentioned very often. The colors are vibrant, and the shots are well composed. Gary Huswitt has made a well-rounded film about what appears on the surface to be a singular topic. The interviews with design’s grand poobah’s of type and graphic design manage to be both initmate and engaging, even with their huge range of personalities. The soundtrack to the film is unassuming and enhances the visuals, but never tries to outshine the visuals; it is simply there, without it though, the movie would not be the same.
